Peter Cullen, the legendary voice of Optimus Prime in the "Transformers" franchise, died Wednesday at 85.

His agent said Cullen "passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family - and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide," according to TMZ.

Cullen's cause of death was not disclosed.

Cullen lent his voice to some of the most recognizable characters in film and television. He was best known as the voice of Optimus Prime in the original 1980s "Transformers" series, later reprising the iconic role in the film franchise, where his booming voice became instantly recognizable to generations of fans.

He voiced the Predator in the 1987 film of the same name, and is lovingly remembered for bringing Eeyore to life in "Winnie the Pooh."

Cullen also voiced Monterey Jack in "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," and will forever be remembered for gifting the world with his signature voice as Karr in "Knight Rider."

His unmistakable delivery brought some of entertainment's most beloved characters to life, transforming them into enduring pieces of pop culture. Though the man behind the microphone is gone, Cullen's legendary voice will continue to echo through the characters that made him an icon.

"His family asks that you honor his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty, and always remember 'be strong enough to be gentle.'"
