Tennessee football first fielded a football team in 1891. Throughout its history, the Vols have played on Aug. 26 one time.

Tennessee opened its 1990 season against eventual national champion Colorado in the Disneyland Pigskin Classic. The game was played at Anaheim Stadium in Anaheim, California with 33,485 in attendance.

No. 8 Tennessee and No. 5 Colorado tied, 31-31. NBC televised the series opener.

Andy Kelly completed 33-of-55 passing attempts for 368 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Chuck Webb recorded 131 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 27 attempts for the Vols.

Tennessee wide receiver Carl Pickens totaled eight receptions for 141 yards and one touchdown.

The Buffaloes suffered a, 23-22, defeat at Illinois in their third game before winning 10 consecutive contests over five ranked opponents to win the AP national championship, sharing it with Georgia Tech (Coaches Poll).

Tennessee finished its 1990 season with a 9-2-2 (5-1-1 SEC) record. The Vols were SEC and Sugar Bowl champions.
