Fans of comedian Shane Gillis were left fuming after he had to issue an apology for accidentally dropping an expletive during his SNL hosting gig, after pointing out that the U.S. government was planning to livestream an execution on TV.

Gillis, 38, served as the host of the Saturday, October 10 episode of the sketch comedy series, which airs on NBC, and wound up dropping an F-bomb during the show’s second live sketch, prompting him to deliver an apology during the show’s close.

After some viewers initially questioned why he had been asked back to host, others questioned his being forced to apologize for his slip of the tongue–when the government had just announced plans to let something far more sinister broadcast live on television.

Gillis apologized for dropping the f-word during a skit called Green Eggs and Ham, which was a play on the Dr. Seuss book, and featured Gillis trying to stop Sam-I-Am (Andrew Dismukes) from giving his dad (Mikey Day) green eggs and ham.

“But he may like green eggs and ham,” Dismukes’ character says.

“Bro, it’s a non-starter. He told me, he said he doesn’t f–g…jeez…like them,” Gillis replied, realizing his mistake.

He then acknowledged it at the end of the show, telling the live studio audience and viewers at home, saying “Sorry about earlier.”

However, fans of his were left fuming that he had to apologize, following Department of War Secretary Pete Hegseth announcing just days earlier that the government planned to livestream the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan on December 3.

“You have to apologize for swearing at midnight on the telly in the country that’s going to livestream an execution,” one person fumed on X, while another said, “yeah, because morals. Obviously.”

“We have masked police shooting US citizens in the streets, but you can’t say eff on TV.” another wrote, while a fourth added, “Americans are the most pathetic species alive. Dripping in guns but afraid of swear words.”

“I’ve given up defending my country from criticism. It’s over,” another moaned.

Gillis’ fans aren’t the only ones who have expressed anger over the planned livestream execution, as lawmakers have also expressed concerns it could either lead to Hasan being seen as a martyr or inspire radicalization.

However, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told CBS News’ Face the Nation that they had no concerns about those issues.

“I follow President Trump. He’s a commander in chief of the country, and he does a phenomenal job,” he said. “He leads this country with a very, very, very direct, forward, straight hand, and he’s restoring American values,” he said.

“I don’t see an elevated risk at this point at all because of this. I think people need to understand, if you attack America, we will come after you, and we will make sure that the punishment fits the crime,” he added. “I have no sympathy for him, and I give absolutely zero thought to the way that this man dies.”
