We all know about Elizabeth Bennet. You’re also likely familiar with her beloved older sister Jane, who marries Mr. Bingley. Of course, there's the wild sister, Lydia, and her closest sibling, Kitty. And that would leave the fifth sister. The middle child: Mary. But not she's not all that contrary, at least not in the telling of Janice Hadlow's The Other Bennet Sister.
Set in the world of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, the 2020 bestselling novel is being adapted for television by BritBox, the streaming service dedicated to British programming. Here's what we know so far.
First stills from the show were revealed in December.

BritBox and the BBC shared first look photos from the show ahead of the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth, which will be celebrated on December 16. The new photos give us our first glimpses at all of the Bennet sisters in costume. Viewers also get a peek at a few familiar characters from Pride and Prejudice, such as Caroline Bingley (Tanya Reynolds), and new characters written by Hadlow for the novel, such as Mr. Hayward (Dónal Finn) and Mr. Ryder (Laurie Davidson).
The series will closely follow Hadlow's book.

Set over 10 episodes, the show notes say the series will follow Mary “as she steps out of her sisters’ shadows in search of her own identity and purpose – finding herself in the middle of an epic love story along the way. Her journey will see her leave her family home in Meryton for the soirees of Regency London and the peaks and vales of the Lake District, all in search of independence, self-love and reinvention.”
The show should also have a consistent vision. Nine out of the 10 half-hour episodes will be penned by the same writer, Sarah Quintrell (Call the Midwife, Doctor Who, His Dark Materials), with Maddie Dai (We Were Dangerous) writing one episode.
The full cast has been announced.
Bridgerton fans can expect a familiar face as Ella Bruccoleri, who portrayed Miss Barragan, a debutante on the Netflix series in season three, will take on the role of one of Jane Austen’s most unassuming characters and, apologies to Mary, forgotten characters. But as the show notes describe, “While we dream of being Lizzy, in reality most of us are more like Mary,” so we can only imagine the kind of light that Bruccoleri will bring to the role.

Veteran actor Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Downton Abbey) steps into the role of the beloved Bennet family patriarch, while Ruth Jones (Gavin & Stacey) will fill the shoes of the slightly eccentric matriarch. Maddie Close (Sunflower Child), Poppy Gilbert (My Oxford Year), Grace Hogg-Robinson (An American in Austen), and Molly Wright (The A Word) will play the sisters Bennet: Jane, Lizzie, Lydia, and Kitty, respectively.

Also notable Pride & Prejudice characters who appear in this book include Anna Fenton-Garvey (The Nevers) as Charlotte Lucas and Ryan Sampson (Doctor Who) as Mr. Collins, and Indira Varma (The Night Manager) and Richard Coyle (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner.
The series will introduce a few new characters, of course, including Varada Sethu (Andor) as Ann Baxter and Aaron Gill (Smothered) as John Sparrow.
A premiere date hasn't been revealed yet.

The series filmed in Wales and England over the summer and fall. Prince William even paid a visit to the set at Bad Wolf studios in Cardiff in October. A specific premiere date hasn’t been announced yet, but it is expected to debut in spring 2026.
The series will stream on BritBox in North America, and on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the U.K.
