Ryan Gosling explains why he has avoided franchise roles up until now, and how he eventually made an exception for the new Star Wars movie. The 45-year-old actor has previously starred in Blade Runner 2049 but has consciously avoided playing the same character twice. However, he reasoned that Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter was simply an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Ryan Gosling shares the reason behind not joining franchises

Ryan Gosling reveals why he skipped franchise roles up until now and why Star Wars: Starfighter was a project that was just “too tempting to turn down”. Gosling explained to io9, “It was Shawn’s enthusiasm and his vision and the script. And I just avoided these things because they never felt right. And I’m glad I did because I feel like, [similar to] a book like this, [it was] worth waiting for. And it is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Notably, Starfighter will hit cinemas next year. Banshee and Warrior fame Jonathan Tropper penned the film, and Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy directed it. Besides Gosling, the film features Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, and Amy Adams, among others.

Interestingly, Levy described it as a “standalone” project. According to him, it’s set in “a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet” in the Star Wars canon. He also hinted that, just like his previous movies, Starfighter will also explore a father-son dynamic (via Entertainment Weekly).

Starfighter is set outside the Skywalker saga. It takes place five years after 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX—The Rise of Skywalker. Previously, Gosling praised it as “such a great story with great and original characters” and “so much heart and adventure.”

The 45-year-old actor is currently promoting his upcoming movie Project Hail Mary. Andy Weir’s eponymous Sci-Fi novel serves as the base for the movie. Project Hail Mary is a science fiction adventure that stars Gosling in the lead role. Other actors starring in the film include Sandra Hüller, Ken Leung, and Lionel Boyce.

The Notebook star portrays Ryland Grace, a science teacher-turned-astronaut who is sent into outer space on a crucial mission to save Earth from a cataclysmic event. Project Hail Mary releases in cinemas on March 20.
