The future of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are up in the air. Their father ex-Prince Andrew’s recent arrest and scrutiny surrounding their mother Sarah Ferguson has led to much uncertainty.

Although the royal sisters’ standing in the family so far has remained unchanged, people are questioning what the future holds. The princesses are still close with their uncle, King Charles, who they spend last Christmas visiting.

PEOPLE revealed that, according to a family friend, the girls “want to hold on to their royal status. It’s their identity.”

Andrew and Sarah are still in the spotlight with her mention in the most recent Epstein files. These show that Sarah continued her friendship with Jeffrey after his 2009 prison release. The files revealed the convicted sex offender was lending her money to help with her financial struggles.

Andrew pushed for his daughters to be referred to as “Her Royal Highness” and receive princess titles at birth. He insisted Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have a royal wedding at Windsor Castle’s St. George’s Chapel in October 2018.

He wanted his youngest daughter’s wedding to be on par with that of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s. According to Andrew Lownie’s book, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, “She’s a granddaughter of the Queen—a princess of the blood. He believed she should get everything.”

Andrew campaigned for his daughters, who are not working royals, to maintain royal residences at Kensington Palace and St. James’s Palace. While Beatrice works in international tech partnerships, Eugenie’s career is in high-end art.

“Their economic prospects depended on remaining within the royal family,” Andrew notes in his book. “Their jobs in client relations are based on being princesses.”
