Princess Charlotte rode the London Underground with her mother on Saturday, and by one account, the 11-year-old couldn't stop looking around.

Kate, the 44-year-old Princess of Wales, and her daughter were seen on the Elizabeth line in central London by a fellow passenger, HELLO! magazine reported. A source told the magazine Charlotte looked almost "amazed" during the ride.

They sat with everyone else. Bodyguards came along but kept their distance. The news follows Kate Middleton channeling Queen Elizabeth at a solo outing in Harry's world.

"They spoke to members of the public sitting across from them. They had security with them and Catherine held Charlotte's hand getting off at Tottenham Court Road. The security didn't make it obvious they were there and they tried to make it as 'normal' as possible," the source said.

"Catherine had her phone with her and was looking at her phone for a couple of minutes. They seemed very relaxed and were chatting together, smiling. It was a brief interaction with people opposite them but they seemed very happy."

Kate wore burgundy, with heels to match. They've gone to the ballet together before, most recently in July, when they saw The Royal Ballet School perform at Opera Holland Park.

The Elizabeth line is named for Charlotte's great-grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, and opened in 2022, her Platinum Jubilee year.

For Charlotte, a Year 8 student at Lambrook Preparatory School in Berkshire, a subway trip is a novelty. Royals usually get around by motorcade or helicopter.

Her mother knows the Tube well. Kate used it often before she married Prince William. In 2013, pregnant with Prince George, she visited Baker Street station with the queen and Prince Philip for the Underground's 150th anniversary and admitted she "missed" riding public transport.

A decade later, she and William surprised commuters by taking the Elizabeth line to a Soho pub, where they chatted with Londoners about plans for King Charles III's coronation.

Princess Diana made a point of showing William and Prince Harry life outside palace walls.

Ken Wharfe, her former protection officer, told HELLO! in 2022, "Although the boys had nannies, she was a hands-on mum and was always with them in their nursery or bringing them down to the kitchen for breakfast."

"They were allowed to have their friends for sleepovers and she'd let them bring them on holidays, too… She took them to Thorpe Park – where they had to queue for the rides like everyone else – a London bus and the underground, and to burger bars and restaurants such as Bill Wyman's Sticky Fingers."

"She even took the boys to M&S to buy William's favourite sausages, which they found exciting, but Charles couldn't understand because they had the finest chefs at Kensington Palace."

Wharfe wrote in his 2017 book, Guarding Diana, that a young Harry once begged to ride a red double-decker. So in 1992, rather than call a car, Wharfe put them on a Routemaster bound for Smollensky's Balloon, a restaurant on the Strand.
