Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s California chapter reportedly came with room for another base from the start. The Duke of Sussex and the former “Suits” actress settled in America after leaving royal duties in 2020. However, British journalist Omid Scobie claimed he was told California was “not intended” as their only home. The claim reframed their reported move to Britain as a planned shift, not a sudden reversal.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly always considered another base
As per a Daily Mail report, Omid Scobie discussed the Sussexes’ reported move. Writing on his new Substack “Off Script,” Scobie said he was told in 2023 that California was “not intended to be their only base.” He added that it was “the right home for that chapter.” However, he said their children’s education and “evolving priorities” would shape what came next.
Meanwhile, Scobie argued that returning to Britain did not automatically contradict leaving it. He wrote, “Leaving somewhere and returning to it later are not contradictory acts.” The royal reporter added that “distance” could reshape a relationship with a place. He said priorities could change with age and time away. According to him, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle now “relate to Britain differently than they once did.”

However, the Daily Mail also gave the wider Megxit timeline. In January 2020, the couple announced plans to step back as senior royals. They wanted financial independence and time split between the UK and North America. After the Sandringham Summit, the late Queen rejected a “half-in, half-out” model. By March 2020, they had officially left senior royal roles and made California their permanent home.
Still, Scobie said the latest shift had been forming for months. In an ABC News clip, he said “the clues have been there all along.” He pointed to the couple reducing their U.S. office size. He also cited their Archewell restructure into Archewell Philanthropies. Scobie said they had been “slowly and methodically planning some form of move.” For Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and California, the report framed the move as an evolving family plan.
