Across several states, millions could face a harsh winter with multiple snowstorms and freezing temperatures, according to a recent long-range model from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

According to the model, the entire East Coast will likely see above-average precipitation this winter, from southern Maine to the tip of Florida, and across the country into Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, as well. On the West Coast, California is expected to see above-average precipitation this winter.

Several independent forecasters have predicted that as many as 19 states should brace for heavy snow blasts this winter.

"We do expect nor'easters to be a frequent event this year up the East Coast, and these do tend to be snow producing at least for somebody depending on where that low [pressure system] is located," according to independent forecaster Direct Weather.

Meteorologist Ryan Hall said the South could face the worst winter weather this year.

"On my map, this is the winter storm battleground, and this is actually where my forecast has changed the most. I'm now a lot more confident than I was a few weeks ago that somebody in this corridor is going to get a big snowstorm or a big ice storm this winter," he said, according to the Daily Mail.

The Northeast is less clear. For New England and the Mid-Atlantic, Hall calls it a coin flip between rain and snow. He expects plenty of storms, but says it’s too early to know whether it will be cold enough for steady snow.

The shift comes from El Niño, which warms the Pacific and pushes the jet stream south, bringing more moisture to the southern U.S. NOAA’s Sept. 17 outlook showed that moisture pattern also moving up the East Coast, with the best chances of heavy rain or snow from northern Florida to eastern Virginia.

Past El Niño winters have varied a lot. Washington, D.C., got just 0.1 inches of snow in 1997-98, but over 56 inches in 2009-10.
