Girls is returning to HBO.

Lena Dunham announced a five-episode revival that will begin production in 2027.

Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells are set to reunite.

The Girls are back.

Almost a decade after the Emmy-winning comedy signed off, Lena Dunham and HBO made the shocking announcement on Tuesday that the series is returning for a five-episode limited run.

Original stars Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells reunited in a new video, in which Dunham checked to see if the cast was down to return.

“Can we still call it Girls?” Dunham asked. “Because we’re like old as f---.”

“We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,” Dunham said in a statement. “I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower. And, as you may remember, once this fivesome starts talking it’s pretty hard to get them to stop.”

She continued, “It’s rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding. I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together… and the chance to wear yellow mesh…”

Created by Dunham, Girls premiered in 2012 and followed aspiring writer Hannah Horvath (Dunham) as she navigates her 20s in New York City, alongside her colorful group of friends, including Marnie (Williams), Jessa (Kirke), Shoshanna (Mamet), and Elijah (Rannells). The series became an Emmy-winning, pop culture phenomenon, and launched many actors to stardom, including current and future members of the MCU: Adam Driver, Christopher Abbott, and Ebon-Moss Bachrach.

The Girls revival comes after Dunham released a book earlier this year, Famesick, in which she peeled back the curtain on some behind-the-scenes drama, including tension between Kirke and Mamet, as well as various headline-worthy anecdotes about Driver, who Dunham says she hasn’t spoken to since Girls wrapped. Unsurprisingly, the Oscar-nominated Driver is not among those currently set to return.

No premiere date is yet known, but production on the new Girls episodes is set to begin in 2027.
