Kristi Noem sparked an online clash with country singer Kacey Musgraves over Texas politics. The exchange began after Noem criticized Musgraves while endorsing Republican Senate hopeful Ken Paxton. Musgraves quickly responded with a pointed remark referencing Noem’s controversial past.
Kristi Noem sparked a heated exchange with Kacey Musgraves over James Talarico
Noem weighed in after Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico attended a Musgraves concert in Dallas. She compared the singer unfavorably with fellow country artist Ella Langley. Noem also made her preference clear in the Texas Senate race.
“I’ll take @ellalangleymusic over Kacey Musgraves any day,” Noem wrote on X. She continued, “And if I’m choosin’ Texas, I’ll take Ken Paxton over James Talarico.” Her comments linked the musical comparison to her political endorsement.
Musgraves did not let the criticism pass without a response. The singer fired back with a sharp remark aimed at Noem. “I don’t think you have a dog in this fight but if you did you have shot it,” Musgraves wrote.

The jab referenced a controversial story from Noem’s past. In her 2024 memoir, Noem described shooting and killing her 14-month-old dog, Cricket. She said the animal was untrainable and the account sparked widespread criticism.
Musgraves’ response turned Noem’s own history into the central punchline. The singer’s comment also redirected attention from the political endorsement to the former Homeland Security secretary’s past. The exchange quickly became another example of celebrity commentary intersecting with campaign politics.
The disagreement comes as both Musgraves and Langley continue their respective tours. Meanwhile, the Texas Senate race between James Talarico and Ken Paxton remains a closely watched political contest. Noem’s post brought the race into a broader online conversation involving country music fans.
Neither the criticism nor the response changes the candidates’ positions in the race. However, the exchange illustrates how a concert appearance can become a political talking point. Musgraves’ pointed comeback ensured that Noem’s comparison drew attention for reasons beyond her endorsement.
