*Industry* star Marisa Abela is opening up about being diagnosed with thyroid cancer at 23, and living the rest of her life on medication after undergoing treatment early in her career.
The actress, now 29, reflected on her diagnosis during an interview with U.K. newspaper *The Times *published on Saturday. As she explained, she was diagnosed after a doctor discovered a lump on her neck while she was experiencing unusual fatigue. Abela underwent an eight-hour operation to remove the tumor, which was followed by radioactive iodine treatment.
"I'm all in the clear now, thank God," the *Back to Black* actress shared, explaining that she still attends regular medical checkups.

Abela also explained that she has to remain on medication for the rest of her life. "I don't have a working thyroid so these pills sort of create one. I'm never going to miss those appointments. The thyroid is all to do with your hormones, and staying on top of your hormones, as a woman, to make sure things are running as they should, is important."
The diagnosis came the same year that Abela made her debut as Yasmin Kara-Hanani on the HBO prestige series following a group of young bankers navigating ambition, excess, and power inside a fictional London investment firm. The show, now in its fourth season, earned Abela a BAFTA for Leading Actress in 2025.
"It's not *Downton Abbey*," the actress joked of the show. "I never get bored of the show. It's not afraid to do things that might upset the audience."

While the role has led to many others, including the upcoming action film *Highlander* with Russell Crowe and Henry Cavill, it pales in comparison to the personal milestone that Abela celebrated last year — her wedding to fellow actor Jamie Bogyo in September.

The couple tied the knot in East Sussex in front of family, friends, and many of Abela's costars, including Myha'la Herrold, who plays Harper on *Industry*, and served as one of her bridesmaids.
The celebration, Abela said, was "amazing and a big party. Very booze-focused."
She added, "Jamie and I went to bed at about 4am, we were sensible. There was an afterparty but I'm glad we didn't go. The next day was so special and I'm glad that I didn't feel like death and could remember everything."

Reflecting on the severity of her health diagnosis and treatment, Abela told the outlet that she's grateful for how far she's come and what's in store for the future, adding, "2026 is looking very exciting."
