In the final week of August, we're in the dog days of summer. Very little is going on in the NBA world. Most of the offseason homework is done and teams are awaiting training camps to start. Right now, everybody is bored out of their mind. But right around the corner, we're about to see the yearly marathon restart.

The Oklahoma City Thunder enter the 2026-27 season as a co-title favorite — alongside the San Antonio Spurs. Even with their cost-cutting moves this offseason, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren should be enough to keep you in the title hunt.

But with Lu Dort and others out the door, Cason Wallace could be in line for a massive promotion. The 22-year-old will likely become a full-time starter this upcoming season. He'll no longer have to call himself the unofficial sixth starter as he has over the first three seasons of his rich basketball career. He'll also get more opportunities to grow on offense.

With a vacuum of possessions and shot attempts up for grabs, Wallace should see an uptick in offensive production. No longer will he have to settle for catch-and-shoot looks with the occasional downhill drive. Now, OKC's success could depend on his development on that side of the floor. It looks like he's taking it seriously this summer.

Wallace showed off his ball-handling creativity in a recent open gym run. He also showed he can pull up from deep outside. In a social media video that highlighted his best plays, he showed some finesse around his driving game as he kissed the ball off the glass for a layup. Everything is set up for him to be a double-digit scorer for the first time in his career this upcoming season. It's now about running away with that opportunity.

These summer months are when NBA players usually make the most strides in their respective games. The downtime allows them to work on their craft undisturbed. It'll be interesting to see how Wallace looks as he's about to enter his fourth NBA season already.
