Cook review: āSupergirlā feels like a āStar Warsā/MCU hybrid

āSupergirlā is above average because of the terrific performance of Milly Alcock in the title role, a few heart-tugging scenes about friendship, and of course the presence of the adorable Krypto, Supergirlās puppy who arrives with her from Krypton to the planet Earth.
Otherwise, is a sometimes-entertaining mixed bag of CGI action and one-liners that will remind you of its (possibly unintentional) ancestry in āStar Warsā sequels and MCU spinoffs cluttered with tons of CGI fights.
Unlike her cousin Superman ā and yes, he appears several times, although not for long, in this film ā Kara and puppy Krypto arrive fully grown on Earth, where her parents send Kara to escape the crumbling planet of Krypton. She not only grieves her parents, but also the entirety of Kypton.
And her coping mechanism is drinking on planets that donāt have a yellow sun ā planets where Kara has no super-powers ā and partying all hours of the night. Sheās solitary and angry, leading a messy life with the now-grown Krypto.
When Katsād beloved pooch is shot and poisoned by a villain, she sets out to find the villain and the antidote as the clock is ticking. She has in tow a girl who seeks revenge on the same villain for slaying her family.
Thereās another āvillainā around, too, and heās quite enjoyable. Jason Momoa is terrific ā and seems to have a terrific time ā as Lobo, owner of the coolest motorcycle ever. His sometimes provides comic relief in a grim story that contisns more death
This female-centric superhero tale is based on theāWoman of Tomorrowā comics series. An interesting aspect of this screenplay is that does not involve a love interest for Kara. Instead, the focus is on friendship and Kara serving as a reluctant mentor ā a nice turn for this kind of tale.
The CGI takes over too often in fight scenes and with a few of the gazillion creatures ā some of whom are engaging ā including one that has a Dobby-ish vibe and doesnāt look like he belongs in this film.

The show is worth it for a few scenes about friendship and loyalty. Judging by the final scene ā there is no extra scene at the end of the credits ā I think Supergirl and the franchise itself may mature in the next film.
