CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss is interested in bringing ousted CNN anchor and current NewsNation host Chris Cuomo over to the network, according to new reports.

As first reported by Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter, Weiss is in discussions with Cuomo about a potential role at CBS News. The outlet claims that Weiss is ā€œenrapturedā€ by Cuomo, whom she describes as a ā€œskilled broadcaster,ā€ and the pair regularly exchange text messages and have shared at least one meal.

Cuomo joined CNN in 2013 to co-host the network’s morning show, New Day. He was promoted in 2018 and hosted Cuomo Prime Time until his termination in 2021. The 56-year-old was fired following claims that he helped his brother, then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in strategic discussions on how to respond to sexual harassment allegations.

He moved to NewsNation in 2022, where he hosts a self-titled prime show. During the show’s October 2022 premiere, Cuomo told viewers he’d ā€œlearned lessons good and badā€ since his CNN firing and promised his new show would be less partisan and more neutral. As of the end of 2025, Cuomo was the network’s highest-rated show.

Cuomo also hosts his own podcast, The Chris Cuomo Project, which launched on July 21, 2022.

'CBS Mornings': Gayle King Reportedly 'Not Happy' at Norah O'Donnell's Rumored Return to Show

As for his potential role at CBS News, Status speculated that his five-year stint hosting CNN’s morning show New Day could lead to him filling the cohost spot on CBS Mornings. The morning show, currently hosted by Gayle King and Nate Burleson, has been looking for a new permanent cohost since Tony Dokoupil was promoted to CBS Evening News back in January.

Status previously reported that former CBS Mornings co-host Norah O’Donnell, who recently filled in as guest host, is also on Weiss’ list of frontrunners for the position.

While Weiss might be interested in bringing Cuomo to CBS News, the chances of it happening anytime seem slim. Cuomo announced in December 2024 that he’d signed a multi-year contract extension with NewsNation. ā€œOf course I am staying,ā€ he said at the time. ā€œWhere else but NewsNation can you expose the game instead of being forced to play? Let’s get after it!ā€

As of writing, neither CBS News nor Cuomo has commented on the report.
