Britney Spears was arrested on suspicion of a DUI on March 4 in Ventura, Calif., and released early the following morning

A rep for the "Toxic" singer is responding to the news in a statement

"This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable," said the rep

A representative for Britney Spears is responding to news of her DUI arrest.

The 44-year-old pop superstar was arrested on suspicion of a DUI on Thursday, March 4 in Ventura, Calif., PEOPLE confirmed. She was released in the early morning hours of Thursday, March 5, according to arrest records from the Ventura Sheriff's Office.

Spears' rep said in a statement, "This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable."

"Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life," continued the rep. "Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."

The statement concluded, "Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being."

Spears is a mom to sons Preston, 20, and Jayden, 19, shared with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline.

Spears' March 4 arrest was listed as a "cite and release" with no probation listed. She's due to appear in court on May 4.

At some point this week, Spears also deactivated her Instagram page. She's previously deactivated and later reactivated her page on the social media platform multiple times.

Over the past few years, Spears' has experienced ups and downs. An L.A. county judge released her from a 13-year conservatorship in 2021. She also sold her music catalog last month, PEOPLE confirmed at the time.
