Dominic Solanke scored a well-deserved equaliser for Spurs after Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off - AP/Dave Thompson

For Roberto De Zerbi and Tottenham, there was relief at salvaging something from a game that had looked to have slipped through their fingers. For Michael Carrick and his muddled Manchester United, there were more questions than answers after another deeply unconvincing outing. A point did neither side much good but it could also have been a lot worse for both.

United did not deserve the lead Bryan Mbeumo gave them 17 minutes from the end of regulation time. They had been incoherent rabble and second best for long periods.

But when Tottenham were reduced to 10 men five minutes later when Rodrigo Bentancur reacted to being shoved by Luke Shaw by head-butting the United left back, Carrick’s side should have seen the game out.

There was nothing about this performance or there is nothing about this team that will have convinced any United supporter inside Old Trafford that they were going to hold on for the victory, even against a side as toothless as Tottenham.

So when Dominic Solanke held off Lisandro Martinez to head home Sandro Tonali’s cross in the second minute of stoppage time, it did not feel the surprise it probably should have done.

Carrick has his say

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Carrick said: ā€œIt was a mixed game. We found it tough to start with. For a number of reasons, we were not quite there. You could see it was a challenging time.

ā€œBut the lads grew into the game, in the second half I thought we were better in everything. To get the game as we wanted it, in such a good position - we should see it through. We have to manage those situations. That’s two late goals which have hurt us, and things look very different. That’s the reality.ā€

When asked about the boos at half-time and full-time, he replied: ā€œIt’s not nice, it hurts a lot because I care about this club. But I understand the disappointment, the reality is what it is, we need to get back to winning games.ā€

De Zerbi reacts

The Tottenham boss told Sky Sports: ā€œI think we played very well against a great team. We had many chances to score in the first half. Three or four. The second half is normal to suffer against this quality. I am very happy because I have seen the right spirit and character.

ā€œWe suffered in the game but every situation of the game. I like the situation we were in with the red card. We need this situation. We have not accepted the defeat. We have to react in all ways we can. It is a bad way, it is not the right way. I kiss Bentancur in the dressing room. Football is character.

ā€œWe win the game if we play as a team. We didn’t win this game playing as a team. Every game like today, we will win many games.ā€

When asked about Solanke, he replied: ā€œHe is a good player for Tottenham. There for not too many strikers better than Solanke. Today he was captain because he deserved it, especially in this moment because he suffer because Tottenham didn’t score or win any games. He is a great guy, great player and we are behind him.

ā€œWe have to believe in ourselves and this football way. If we believe, improve and play as a team, we will score many goals and win many games. If we don’t play as a team, it is impossible.ā€

Unhappy home crowd

More jeers at the final whistle from United fans - they weren’t happy with this point against a team there for the taking after Rodrigo Bentancur’s dismissal. Michael Carrick is still trying to find answers because this United team is not clicking.

07:28pm

FT: Man Utd 1 Tottenham 1

The late chaos is over at Old Trafford as Solanke rescues a precious point for Tottenham with that 92nd minute equaliser. Man Utd thought they had the game wrapped up after Mbeumo’s well-taken opener was followed by Bentancur’s crazy red card. However, Spurs, who were the better team throughout the contest, kept fighting and found a fully deserved leveller. The visitors remain winless, but it’s another worrying performance from Carrick’s side, who have picked up just one victory in six top-flight matches.

07:26pm

90+8: Man Utd 1 Tottenham 1

Dalot and Gray are both handed yellow cards for fouls that broke up play. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Spurs currently look like the more likely side to claim a victory.

07:22pm

90+5: Man Utd 1 Tottenham 1

It’s just the Spurs fans singing in Old Trafford now. They fully deserved that equaliser. Rashford and Heaven are on for the hosts, with Cunha and Shaw taken off.

07:19pm

GOAL! 10-man Spurs find a stoppage-time equaliser thanks to Solanke

Incredible drama at Old Trafford! Tonali floats a cross into the box and Solanke shrugs off Martinez, before flicking a delicate header into the bottom corner to send Spurs’ away support wild. Man Utd are stunned. Could the visitors go on and win this now?

07:17pm

Van Hecke does well to block Cunha’s effort and the referee indicates that there will be a minimum of eight minutes of added time.

07:16pm

De Zerbi’s final roll of the dice in search of a late leveller sees Fernandes replace Senesi for the remaining few minutes. Spurs must throw everyone forward now.

Martinez lunges in on Maddison and brings down the playmaker with a foul. The centre-back picks up a yellow card for his troubles.

07:13pm

Baleba unleashes Mbeumo with an over-the-top through ball. Racing through on goal, the forward shoots, but from an unfavourable angle, Kinsky parries his near post effort out for a corner.

07:11pm

84 min: Man Utd 1 Tottenham 0

Fernandes is cautioned after catching Van Hecke with a late challenge on his ankle. Spurs players aren’t happy with the tackle.

07:09pm

82 min: Man Utd 1 Tottenham 0

Bentancur’s recklessness has left Spurs with a mountain to climb. Their chance of a comeback looks a bit slimmer now that Man Utd have a numerical advantage on the pitch.

07:04pm

RED CARD! Bentancur is dismissed and Tottenham are down to 10 men

It’s all kicked off at Old Trafford! Bentancur flies in with a risky challenge on Shaw. The Man Utd defender is furious with the tackle and the two players square up to each other. Shaw pushes Bentancur over and the midfielder responds by leaning into the Englishman, creating a headbutt-like action. Shaw and Van Hecke are also given yellows for their roles in that altercation.

07:03pm

75 min: Man Utd 1 Tottenham 0

Spurs respond to going behind by making a double change as Van de Ven and Maddison come on to replace Udogie and Gallagher.

07:00pm

GOAL! Man Utd take the lead through Mbeumo’s composed finish

It’s against the run of play, but Man Utd won’t care, they have the all-important advantage! Cunha runs into a channel and slips a pass into Mbeumo. Van Hecke allows the forward to turn and Mbeumo slides a delightful effort into the far bottom corner. Old Trafford erupts in joy. Tottenham can’t believe it.

06:56pm

69 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Tonali’s pass is intercepted by Maguire, but the ball trickles into the onrushing Savio’s path. The winger’s powerful first-time effort is blocked by Mainoo’s sliding challenge and flies over the bar.

It’s Tottenham’s turn to make some alterations as Bentancur and Marmoush enter the action, replacing Bergvall and Kudus.

Zirkzee turns Senesi and threads a pass through to Fernandes. From a tight angle, the Man Utd captain slices a ferocious effort into the side netting. The playmaker has been quiet today, but you can never write him off from scoring or providing an assist.

Baleba’s first action in a Man Utd shirt sees the midfielder smash a hopeful volley wildly off target. Can Baleba’s introductrion lift the crowd and help give the hosts some impetus?

Carrick has seen enough, ordering a much-needed triple change. Baleba replaces Tielemans to make his Man Utd debut. The other changes see Amad and Yoro withdrawn for Zirkzee and Dalot.

06:45pm

58 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Van Hecke wins the header at the back post of a corner, looping the ball right back into the danger zone, but Maguire is there to crucially nod it over the bar.

06:44pm

55 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Man Utd have the ball in the net, but it won’t count, as Cunha failed to keep it in play before teeing up Tielemans to finish from close range. Old Trafford thought it had lift-off against the run of play, but they’ve been denied by the correct decision.

06:41pm

51 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Tottenham will be kicking themselves! Once again, Savio is causing trouble for Man Utd, driving at the home side’s defence before crossing for Solanke. The striker beats Martinez to the delivery, but directs his half-volley over the bar. That is another hugely frustrating passage of play for Spurs, and yet another missed opportunity. De Zerbi can’t believe it.

06:38pm

49 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

How have Tottenham not scored there?! Savio races through after latching onto Tonali’s piercing pass. Maguire can’t keep up with the winger’s pace as he reaches the byline. Kudus and Solanke are waiting for a tap-in inside the six-yard box, but the ball lands at Shaw’s feet, and he clears.

Boos greet the half-time whistle as Man Utd have underperformed on their return to Premier League action. However, luckily for the hosts, Tottenham have lacked composure in front of goal, with Solanke, Kudus and Gallagher all missing notable chances.

There will be one minute of added time to round off this first half.

Spurs go close again! Solanke plays in Gallagher, who bundles his way into the six-yard box. Tielemans, Martinez and Yoro all fail to apprehend the Spurs midfielder, who digs a close-range shot out of his feet. However, Lammens is there to make a crucial block and thwart the visitors.

06:11pm

41 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Spurs have been on top in this half but there has been a lack of quality from both teams. It has been a scrap between two average teams. Conor Gallagher the most influential player on the pitch so far.

Following Solanke and Kudus’ earlier chances, Spurs have been quiet going forward. Man Utd have been slowly growing into the game.

06:08pm

Amad is dribbling with intent and Gallagher bumps into him. The referee doesn’t give a free-kick and the home fans aren’t happy with that decision. It’s also worth remembering that Gallagher is on a yellow card. He needs to be careful.

06:06pm

34 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Amad forces a save from Kinsky! Man Utd clear a Tottenham corner and burst forward on the counter through Mbeumo. The former Brentford man is chased by Tonali and has Amad in support, before playing the pass into the 24-year-old. Udogie closes down the angle, forcing Amad to take the chance with a first-time shot. His fizzing strike is comfortably collected by Kinsky, but that is more encouraging from the hosts.

06:03pm

32 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

You can feel the nervousness in the Old Trafford crowd. Spurs’ dominance has calmed over the last 10 minutes, but Man Utd have failed to take control or pick up the tempo.

05:58pm

This game looks it could be time for Baleba’s much-anticipated debut. Man Utd’s current midfield doesn’t possess enough running power and Tottenham are exploiting that.

05:56pm

25 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Man Utd’s slow start prompts some boos from the home fans. Cunha attempts to rally the crowd, but his side have given their supporters nothing to be positive about in this game so far. From a Spurs perspective, you can see why they’ve only scored two top-flights goals this season. They should be two-nil up, but they’ve notably lacked end-product.

05:51pm

21 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Tottenham miss another golden chance! It’s a brilliant passing move from defence to attack. It ends with Savio teeing up Kudus with an intelligent cross. The Ghanaian can’t quite fully wrap his foot around the delivery, and from inside the penalty area, he slams an unmarked effort wide of the bottom corner.

05:50pm

19 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Currently, Man Utd are being outnumbered in midfield. The interchangeability of Tonali, Bergvall and Gallagher is running rings around Mainoo and Tielemans. Fernandes’ lack of defensive instinct is leaving the hosts’ midfield pivot exposed.

Man Utd then make a rare foray forward as Cunha whips in a cross towards Amad. Udogie is alert to the danger and gets in front of the winger to clear.

05:46pm

16 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Ex-Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper is here in the directors’ box at Old Trafford. He was last at Brondby in Denmark and will inevitably be considered for jobs here in England as chairmen look to make changes during the season.

05:44pm

13 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

Still, it’s Tottenham forcing the issue as Kudus dashes past Shaw with his blistering pace. Cunha tracks back but can’t stop the winger from digging out a cross. Yoro’s skewed clearance is headed back to Lammens by Tielemans. Man Utd need to careful, they cannot continue playing like this.

The visitors then steam forward again on the counter. On this occasion, Yoro defends magnificently, executing a well-timed sliding tackle on Van Hecke.

05:39pm

9 min: Man Utd 0 Tottenham 0

The visitors have made an excellent start to this game. Savio breezes past Maguire like he isn’t even there, but can’t quite find Kudus with his low cross. De Zerbi will want his side to capitalise on this dominant period. Man Utd look sluggish and asleep so far.

05:38pm

Gallagher receives an early yellow card after pulling Maguire back. Referee Attwell isn’t taking any prisoners. Man Utd supporters also show their love and appreciation for Rui Pinto with this banner.

Tottenham waste a huge chance! What is Lammens doing?! The Man Utd goalkeeper tries to pick out Mainoo with a very risky pass. It’s intercepted by Bergvall, who tees up Solanke. One-on-one with Lammens, the Spurs striker’s whipped effort is blocked by Lammens. The Belgian goes from zero to hero, emphatically redeeming himself.

04:55pm

Will Man Utd’s attack click against Tottenham?

Amad Diallo’s return will be most welcome for Michael Carrick as it gives him a chance to freshen up his attack. Matheus Cunha, who has struggled in a false nine role, is likely to revert to the left with Marcus Rashford on the bench so I suspect Bryan Mbeumo will play through the middle with Amad off the right, and Bruno Fernandes in behind Mbeumo. Fernandes has been carrying an injury for weeks and it’s shown at times. United fans will be keen to see Carlos Baleba off the bench. Bottom club Spurs are still searching for their first win. In truth, this is a game both sides desperately need to win.

04:51pm

Debut pending?

Following his big-money switch from Brighton to Man Utd in the summer, Carlos Baleba is amongst the substitutes this evening. The 22-year-old is still waiting to make his debut for his new club because of injury issues. Could it arrive at Old Trafford against Tottenham?

Early season six-pointer?

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of this mouthwatering Premier League game between Manchester United and Tottenham at Old Trafford.

If Manchester City had not entered a legal battle with the Premier League after being found guilty of breaching 114 charges relating to financial regulations by an independent panel, then surely there would be more pressure on the two head coaches in the dugout this evening?

Man Utd and Tottenham have undoubtedly both endured extremely disappointing starts to their respective top-flight campaigns. The hosts sit just inside the bottom half of the table after picking up just five points from their opening five matches. It’s going even worse for Tottenham, who languish in 20th with zero wins and just two points.

The perilous landscape leaves only one reasonable conclusion: this has all the ingredients for an early season six-pointer.

The strain is perhaps less intense on Michael Carrick, with the Englishman having built up a bundle of goodwill after cleaning up the mess left by Ruben Amorim last season as Man Utd eventually finished third, qualifying for the Champions League. Fans were left slightly underwhelmed by the club’s transfer window, with the players at Carrick’s disposal having not forged any momentum so far in this campaign.

Michael Carrick could do with a victory to brighten up the mood at Old Trafford - Manchester United/Zohaib Alam

The spotlight is definitely shining more intensely upon Roberto De Zerbi after big-spending Tottenham splashed over £300m in the summer on the likes of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke and Savio. However, the Italian boss is yet to strike the correct rhythm with his newly-formed squad. An encouraging performance backed up by a positive result here at Old Trafford could be the perfect antidote to ease the worries of fans fearing that Tottenham could be embroiled in another relegation battle.

All eyes are on this one. Kick-off is at 17:30, with team news coming shortly.
