Andrew Garfield is weighing in on the viral Botox debate.

After internet chatter circulated about the injectable inhibiting actors from giving emotional performances, Garfield shared his opinion on the subject.

During a Vanity Fair lie detector test interview published on Thursday, Aug. 20, his Magic Faraway Tree costar Claire Foy asked if he thinks Botox is ā€œpreventingā€ actors from showing their emotions.

ā€œOh god, that’s tricky,ā€ Garfield, 43, replied. ā€œI want to tread a bit carefully here, because I have, obviously, a very particular belief that it would be great if we lived in a society where no one felt the pressure to do anything to their faces.ā€

He continued, ā€œBut, unfortunately, I understand that we’re in a society where there is a pressure to do stuff to the faces — especially for the women.ā€

Foy, 42, followed up by asking, ā€œDo you think that actors doing things to their faces is the reason why other people do things to their faces?ā€

Garfield admitted that actors have a certain ā€œresponsibility.ā€

ā€œI think, for better or worse, people look to people in the public eye to decide what the norm is, or what is quote-unquote ā€˜aspirational,ā€™ā€ he replied. ā€œ... Yeah, I think there is a responsibility that we have, being in the public eye, to take care of our faces in a natural way.ā€

Many actors have opened up about their experiences with Botox, with some denouncing the injectable.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published in March, Lisa Kudrow said she’s done with Botox after experiencing strange side effects.

ā€œI think it contributed to my eye irritation and this weird pattern on my forehead, so I’m probably done with it now anyway,ā€ Kudrow, 63, said, revealing that she got Botox for the first time at age 60.

Sydney Sweeney previously shared that she was told to get Botox at 16 years old.

Speaking with Variety in an interview published in October 2025, the Emmy-nominated actress revealed the criticism she was hit with about her appearance, particularly her ā€œvery strong eyebrow muscles,ā€ before making it big in Hollywood.

ā€œI had someone tell me to fix my face or else I’m not going to make it. I should get Botox. I was 16!ā€ the Euphoria star said. Sweeney went on to explain that she’d even get ignored during her calls. ā€œOr I’m in a casting and I’m reading my scene and the casting director is eating a bag of chips, and I’m like, ā€˜You’re not paying attention at all.’ ā€

The star added that she’s never had any work done and plans to ā€œage gracefully.ā€

ā€œI’ve never gotten anything done. I’m absolutely terrified of needles. No tattoos. Nothing. I’m going to age gracefully,ā€ said Sweeney.
