Jackson White's parents, Katey Sagal and Jack Cameron White, have inspired him in different ways.

Katey, a seasoned actress, is best known for her roles in Married... with Children and Sons of Anarchy. Jack was a drummer and an actor before he died in 2024.

In a September 2022 interview with Esquire, Jackson shared that his parents raised him and his sister, Sarah White, between Los Angeles and Nashville after their divorce in 2000.

Jackson shares a close bond with his mom, who costarred with him in season 1 of Tell Me Lies. In interviews, Katey often reflects on parenting and her relationship with her son.

Speaking to CNN in August 2009, she described being a mom as “the most self-sacrificing thing” she’s done. “I’ve never loved anybody the way I love my children,” Katey explained. “It’s an experience I was surprised by.”

After Katey and Jack married in 1993, they welcomed daughter Sarah on Aug. 7, 1994, followed by son Jackson on March 1, 1996.

Both kids have followed in their parents’ footsteps as entertainers.

Sarah has pursued both music and acting, including appearing on NCIS, Grey's Anatomy, The Rookie and The Abandons. Meanwhile, Jackson has landed roles in notable projects like The Middle, SEAL Team, Mrs. Fletcher and Tell Me Lies.

In addition, Katey and her current husband, Kurt Sutter, share daughter Esmé Sutter, who was born on Jan. 10, 2007. (Katey has also previously spoken about experiencing a stillbirth with her daughter Ruby in October 1991.)

During his September 2022 interview with Esquire, Jackson reflected on his upbringing, which was split between Los Angeles and Nashville — two homes filled with music.

“My mom was a musician long before she was an actor, and it was a really musical house,” he said. “I grew up going back and forth between L.A. and Nashville, where my dad lived in a house with a recording studio.”

Jackson remembered that there were several sets of drums, keyboards, guitars and B3 organs at his father's house. “You’d wake up to blasting music,” he recalled. “And that was the lifestyle that I fell in love with.”

While he enjoyed hearing his dad's touring stories, it led to Jackson's desire to have "structure" and "discipline" with his work, and he decided to pursue acting instead of music.

According to Jack’s website, he left high school after his junior year and hitchhiked from Michigan to California to chase his dream of becoming a drummer. Within six months of moving, he landed a gig playing for the R&B duo, Ike and Tina Turner.

“Many years in LA yielded some of the greatest gigs with some of my favorite bands,” Jack wrote on his site.

He noted that he was best known for his work with singer/songwriter Rick Springfield in "1976, 1980-84 and 1990-2002.” Over the years, Jackson’s father also played drums for notable artists like Mitch Ryder, Sam the Sham, Redbone and Johnny Cash, among others.

When Jackson spoke to Esquire in September 2022, he pointed out that his father got jobs with these major artists “just by word of mouth.” He added, “I have all these stories of him going on these crazy tours in Japan and Europe.”

Katey and Jack divorced in 2000 after about seven years of marriage.

In 2004, Katey married Sutter, an actor and the Sons of Anarchy creator.

After Jack died, Katey expressed her gratitude for her ex-husband.

“Beautiful Jackson and Beautiful Sarah I will always be grateful to your dad for you!” she commented on Jackson’s since-deleted tribute post for his father. She added, “Thank you Jack❤️🙏 Finally free.”

In the first season of Tell Me Lies, which premiered in September 2022, Katey joined the cast as Jackson’s on-screen mom.

“It was really fun for us,” she said during a March 2025 appearance on the MeSsy podcast. “We’d never worked together as actors, and we have a super close relationship.”

During a September 2022 interview with The Seattle Times, Jackson called the casting “perfect” and described the experience as “insane.”

He explained, “I’m friends with my mother, and we had to be extremely passive-aggressive and tense, but it was so fun and exciting to build that relationship and talk to each other [in ways we] never really have before.”

Katey told the outlet that it was difficult to put their real-life relationship aside and “take on the extremely toxic dynamic between Stephen and his mom.” But she noted that her son was up to the challenge, “Jackson shows up fully on set, ready to play, present and collaborative. It was beautiful.”

While Katey is supportive of Jackson’s acting career today, she didn’t always approve of her son following in her footsteps.

In a September 2022 interview with PEOPLE, Jackson shared that her initial acting advice was, “Don’t do it. Do something else.” He revealed that she didn’t let him pursue acting until he turned 18.

Although Jackson ended up working in Hollywood, Katey emphasized to the MeSsy hosts that he “hates that whole ‘nepo baby’ thing” and “takes a lot of pride” in having a different last name and his own path in the industry.

On July 16, 2024, Jackson announced that his father passed away at 70 years old.

While his cause of death hasn’t been publicly disclosed, Jack previously hinted at health challenges in a May 2023 Facebook post.

Alongside a photo with his children, he wrote, “Sarah and Jackson have shown up for every treatment! Love heals and lasts forever.” He also described them as the two “most amazing and important people” in his life.

Following Jack’s death, Jackson shared a since-deleted Instagram tribute to his father, featuring baby photos and clips of Jack performing. “This guy taught me everything,” the actor wrote in his caption.

He acknowledged that they had their “ups and downs,” but explained that “in the end it was just love.”

Jackson went on to describe his father as “an open book, a fighter, genuinely the funniest person my sister and I knew” and someone who “single-handedly invented the loudest, most powerful backbeat of any drummer I’ve ever seen.”

He shared that he and his sister will remember Jack as “6 foot 4 with a denim shirt and a Starbucks muffin, driving us around, teaching us every important song ever written.” the actor concluded, “I love you dad forever.”
