Hello my fellow BuzzFeed pop culture lovers. We’ve gone through celebrities whose styles evolved majorly over the course of their careers, which got me thinking: What about their paychecks? I mean, I love seeing a celebrity go from their first-ever role to becoming one of the highest-paid stars in Hollywood, and I’m always a little nosy about how much they were actually making along the way. Seeing all those custom pieces and major designer looks got me wondering just how much they were earning to be able to afford that kind of glow-up.So, I decided to dig into their paychecks over the years, and let’s just say some of these numbers are WILD.Here are 20 celebrities whose paychecks went from “wait, that’s it?” to “EXCUSE ME, HOW MUCH?”

1. Tom HollandTHEN: Tom Holland's first big-screen role was in The Impossible in 2012, when he was just 16 (Yes, SIXTEEN). He reportedly earned $100,000 for playing Lucas Bennett, which isn't a bad start for your first movie—but just wait until you see where his paychecks went from here.

Apaches EntertainmentIN BETWEEN: Then came Spider-Man, and his paycheck started climbing FAST. Holland earned $250,000 for his first appearance as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. For Spider-Man: Homecoming the following year, his base salary jumped to $500,000, with bonuses bringing his total to around $1.5 million. And I think we can all agree that $1.5 million feels like a significant upgrade from $100K.

Columbia PicturesNOW: These days, Holland is operating in a paycheck universe of its own, and I would say he earned it. He reportedly made around $10 million for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, and for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, he's gotten $20 million upfront, with backend bonuses that could push his total earnings to more than $100 million. Going from $100K for your first movie to potentially $100+ million is the kind of career progression I would like to see for myself, please.

Daniel RadcliffeTHEN: Daniel Radcliffe's first feature-film role was actually a small part in The Tailor of Panama in 2001, but his first truly major payday came that same year when he was cast as Harry Potter. According to Fortune, he earned around $1 million for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Warner Bros. PicturesIN BETWEEN: And then his Harry Potter paychecks got very serious, very quickly. Radcliffe went on to earn around $3 million for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and his salary continued climbing as the franchise became one of the biggest movie series in the world. By the final two Deathly Hallows films, he was making around $25 million per movie. Going from $1 million to $25 million for the same character is quite the career arc.

NOW: Instead of trying to replace those massive franchise paychecks, he started taking on a mix of studio movies, tiny indie films, and theater—including projects that let him play very, very different characters. His reported paychecks have ranged from around $750,000 for Swiss Army Man to roughly $3 million for Now You See Me 2 and $2–3 million for The Lost City. I kind of love that he doesn't seem particularly interested in chasing another Harry Potter-sized check. Radcliffe has even explained that the financial success of the franchise gave him the freedom to choose projects based on what he actually wanted to do.

Millie Bobby BrownTHEN: Millie Bobby Brown's first credited acting job was a small role in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland in 2013, but her big break came three years later with Stranger Things. When the show premiered, she was just 12 and was making around $20,000–$30,000 per episode as Eleven.

21 Laps EntertainmentIN BETWEEN: Then Stranger Things turned Millie into a household name, and she didn't stay in the “promising child actor” category for long. By Seasons 3 and 4, her reported salary had reached around $250,000–$300,000 per episode. At the time, she also became the face of the Enola Holmes franchise and reportedly earned around $6.1 million for the first movie in 2020. For Enola Holmes 2, that number jumped to a reported $10 million.

NetflixNOW: For the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, Millie Bobby Brown's paycheck landed somewhere between $10 million and $12 million—or roughly $1.25 million per episode. I mean, going into the final season with an eight-figure check is one way to say goodbye to Hawkins.

Upside Down Pictures4. ZendayaTHEN: Zendaya was only 14 when she landed her breakout role as Rocky Blue on Disney Channel's Shake It Up in 2010. She reportedly earned around $140,000 from the sitcom. And she was already branching into movies, too: for her first film role as Halley Brandon in the 2012 Disney Channel Original Movie Frenemies, she took home $284,000. So, yes, Zendaya was already collecting some solid checks before Hollywood really figured out what it had on its hands.

Disney ChannelIN BETWEEN: Her transition from Disney star to actress came with some noticeable changes to her paycheck. She reportedly made around $300,000 for Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017 and another $300,000 for the first Dune in 2021. But Spider-Man: No Way Home changed the game, with Zendaya landing a deal in the $10 million range. She went on to earn an estimated $10 million for Challengers, where she also took on a producer role. At this point, “Disney Channel star” was definitely no longer the headline.

Metro-Goldwyn-MayerNOW: And now Zendaya can apparently negotiate a paycheck that makes her early Shake It Up salary look almost hilariously small. She reportedly landed a deal worth roughly $1 million per episode for Season 3 of Euphoria, while she's also pulling in millions for her film roles—including an estimated $8 million for Spider-Man: Brand New Day and around $6 million for The Drama.

Robert PattinsonTHEN: Before anyone knew his name, Robert Pattinson was apparently earning his first paychecks the very normal way: working part-time at a convenience store in London as a teenager. Then came Twilight in 2008, where he stepped into the role of Edward Cullen and earned an estimated $2.5 million.

Maverick FilmsIN BETWEEN: And then Twilight became, well, Twilight, and Pattinson's paycheck went completely off the rails. By the two Breaking Dawn movies, he was reportedly making around $25 million per film, plus a percentage of the box office. After the franchise wrapped, he took a very unconventional route with smaller movies before returning to blockbuster territory as Batman. For The Batman in 2022, he reportedly earned around $3 million upfront.

Warner Bros. PicturesNOW: Pattinson is back to gearing major movie-star money, with his recent projects reportedly putting him in the multi-million-dollar-per-film range. He's estimated to have earned around $5–7 million for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey and $6 million for The Drama. I mean, if someone had told teenage Pattinson while he was working that convenience-store job that he'd one day be making millions for a Christopher Nolan movie, I doubt he would've believed them.

Universal Pictures6. Sandra BullockTHEN: Sandra Bullock was still building her name when she landed Speed in 1994, earning around $500,000 for playing Annie Porter. The movie became a huge hit and helped turn her into a major leading lady. Just a year later, she reportedly made around $1 million for While You Were Sleeping, followed by roughly $6 million for A Time to Kill in 1996. By Speed 2: Cruise Control in 1997, her reported salary had reached $10.5–13 million. That is a quick climb up the ladder, even by industry standards.

20th Century FoxIN BETWEEN: By the 2000s, Bullock was established as one of Hollywood's biggest stars. She earned $17.5 million for Miss Congeniality 2 and then came Gravity in 2013, where she earned $20 million upfront plus backend, ultimately taking home an estimated $70+ million.

Castle Rock EntertainmentNOW: Fast-forward nearly 30 years, and Bullock is still getting the checks. She earned $20 million upfront for The Lost City in 2022, according to Variety, and is back as Sally Owens in Practical Magic 2, where she's also a producer. Her salary for the sequel hasn't been made public yet, but I'm very curious to see what that number ends up being.

THEN: Margot Robbie's big Hollywood breakthrough came with The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013, and she reportedly earned around $347,000 for the role. Not a bad start at all, but her next few years in acting changed the numbers quickly.

Paramount PicturesIN BETWEEN: By the time Birds of Prey came out in 2020, Robbie was reportedly earning around $9–10 million to play Harley Quinn. Her exact salary for Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood (2019) wasn't publicly disclosed, although she was third-billed behind Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, who each earned $10 million. Amsterdam in 2022 also didn't have a publicly confirmed salary for Robbie, but reports suggested it was likely below $5 million.

Columbia PicturesNOW: Then came Barbie in 2023, and this was easily one of Robbie's biggest paydays. She was initially paid $12.5 million to star in and produce the movie, according to Variety. And considering how huge Barbie became, I think we can all agree that was a fitting paycheck for the woman who brought Barbie to life.

Mattel Films8. Jim CarreyTHEN: Jim Carrey's big-screen breakthrough came in 1994 with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, for which he was said to have earned around $350,000–$450,000. That same year, he was paid about $450,000 for The Mask.

Motion Picture Corporation of AmericaIN BETWEEN: Then Dumb and Dumber came along and his paycheck jumped all the way to $7 million. 1994 sure was a good year for Jim Carrey. Just two years later, Carrey was already making Hollywood salary history. He reportedly landed $20 million upfront for The Cable Guy in 1996, making him the first comic actor to command that kind of salary. With backend box-office participation, his total compensation was estimated at around $35 million. I don't think anyone was still thinking of him as the guy who made $400K for Ace Ventura by then.

Columbia PicturesNOW: Jim Carrey eventually returned as Dr. Robotnik for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, but the exact paychecks for the first two movies were never made public. For Sonic the Hedgehog 3, however, his salary was estimated to be around $12 million.

Paramount Pictures9. Viola DavisTHEN: Viola Davis's first major film role came in Antwone Fisher in 2002, and she has recalled being paid just $671 for it. That tiny paycheck was a humble beginning for someone who would eventually become one of the most respected actresses in the industry.

Fox Searchlight PicturesIN BETWEEN: Her career took a major turn when she became Annalise Keating on How to Get Away with Murder. Davis eventually earned around $250,000 per episode, which worked out to roughly $3.75 million per season. By 2020, those TV earnings, along with her work in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, helped put her at an estimated $15.5 million in earnings for the year, making her No. 10 on Forbes' list of the highest-paid actresses in 2020. I mean, going from a $671 movie check to a Forbes list is quiteeeee the career progression.

ABC StudiosNOW: By the time The Woman King and Air came along, Davis was also producing some of her own projects. For Air in 2023, her salary was estimated at around $25 million. This is what I call an impressive jump in life.

Skydance Media10. Bryan CranstonTHEN: Bryan Cranston's Malcolm in the Middle salary was never publicly confirmed, but his co-star Jane Kaczmarek was making around $150,000 per episode by Season 4, as per ABC News, and Cranston was likely in a similar range. So even before Walter White entered the picture, Cranston was already doing kind of well for himself.

Fox Television StudiosIN BETWEEN: Then came Breaking Bad, and Cranston's paycheck started breaking good. By the show's final season, he was reportedly making around $225,000 per episode, which worked out to roughly $3.6 million across the 16-episode final season. I feel like this is one of those cases where the character's career and the actor's paycheck both got progressively more intense.

AMC networkNOW: Cranston kept that TV momentum going with Your Honor, where he earned around $750,000 per episode. Across the show's 20 episodes, that put his total earnings at roughly $15 million.

11. Sylvester StalloneTHEN: Sylvester Stallone's Rocky paycheck started out surprisingly small. He received just $35,000 upfront for the 1976 film, which he also wrote, but his backend deal eventually pushed his earnings to around $2.5 million. Not bad for a script he reportedly wrote in just three days.

Chartoff-Winkler ProductionsIN BETWEEN: Once Rocky turned into a full-blown franchise, Stallone's paychecks started moving as fast as his throws. He made $1 million upfront for Rocky II (1979), then took just $120,000 for Rocky III (1982) in exchange for a much bigger cut of the profits, which reportedly brought his total to around $10 million. By Rocky IV (1985) and Rocky V (1990), he was getting $12 million and $15 million.

Chartoff-Winkler ProductionsNOW: These days, Stallone has taken that blockbuster-star earning power to television. As Dwight "The General" Manfredi on Tulsa King, he reportedly started out making around $750,000–$1 million per episode in Season 1, before his salary jumped to roughly $1.5 million per episode for Season 2.

MTV Entertainment Studios12. Brad PittTHEN: Brad Pitt's first major paycheck was a modest one. He earned just $6,000 for his breakout role as J.D. in Thelma & Louise in 1991. Safe to say, J.D. was only the beginning.

Metro-Goldwyn-MayerIN BETWEEN: By the time Fight Club came out in 1999, Pitt was reportedly earning around $17 million for his movie roles, and his payday for Moneyball in 2011 was believed to be more than $10 million. Then came Troy in 2004, where he reportedly made around $17.5 million to play Achilles.

Fox 2000 PicturesNOW: These days, Pitt is still collecting some hefty movie checks. He earned $20 million for Bullet Train in 2022, and his combined earnings from Bullet Train, Babylon, and The Lost City that year were estimated at around $30 million. Then F1 came along with another reported $30 million payday. At this point, I think the $6,000 Thelma & Louise paycheck belongs in a museum.

Apple13. Anne HathawayTHEN: Anne Hathaway's breakout came with The Princess Diaries in 2001, and she earned around $400,000 for playing Mia Thermopolis. A few years later, The Devil Wears Prada gave her paycheck another boost: she reportedly made $1 million for the 2006 hit. Mia had a makeover, and apparently so did Anne's paycheck.

Walt Disney PicturesIN BETWEEN: By the time Hathaway took on Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, her salary had climbed to a reported $7.5 million. She was also pulling in millions for other major projects around this time, including an estimated $3 million for Ocean's 8 in 2018. Her exact salary for Alice in Wonderland wasn't publicly known, although estimates put her usual pay around that period at roughly $5 million per movie. At this point, the princess had definitely graduated to A-list paychecks.

Legendary PicturesNOW: Fast-forward to today, and Hathaway's paychecks are looking very different from that first $400,000 Princess Diaries check. She landed an upfront $12.5 million for The Devil Wears Prada 2, according to Variety, while her paycheck for Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey was estimated at around $4–7 million.

20th Century Studios14. Keanu ReevesTHEN: Keanu Reeves' first major film role came in Youngblood in 1986, where he played hockey goalie Heaver and earned around $3,000. A little over a decade later, The Matrix changed the game. Reeves made $15 million upfront for the 1999 sci-fi hit, plus a percentage of the box office. And that percentage turned out to be VERY important.

Silver PicturesIN BETWEEN: The Matrix franchise ended up becoming one of the biggest paydays of Reeves' career. Across the first three films, his total earnings were estimated at around $250 million, largely because of his backend deal. Then came John Wick, where he made $1–2 million for the first movie, around $2–2.5 million for Chapter 2, and roughly $2–2.5 million for Chapter 3, with ownership and bonuses also part of the deals, as per THR. So even when the upfront numbers looked smaller, there was clearly more going on behind the scenes.

LionsgateNOW: By John Wick: Chapter 4, Reeves' reported upfront salary had climbed to around $15 million, a significant jump from the first film. He also returned as Neo for The Matrix Resurrections in 2021, earning around $12–14 million upfront, plus backend compensation and bonuses.

Warner Bros. Pictures15. Matt DamonTHEN: Matt Damon’s career started with a $25,000 paycheck for the 1990 TV movie Rising Son, according to Fortune. A few years later, Good Will Hunting changed the game: Damon and Ben Affleck sold their screenplay for $600,000, and Damon reportedly took home another $350,000 for starring as Will Hunting.

MiramaxIN BETWEEN: Then came Jason Bourne. He reportedly pocketed around $26 million each for The Bourne Supremacy (2004) and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), followed by roughly $25 million for The Martian (2015) and another $25 million for Jason Bourne (2016). Estimates put his combined payday at up to $30 million, while he’s also been estimated to have pocketed around $15 million upfront for playing Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

After the first movie became a hit, Witherspoon’s paycheck jumped to a reported $12.5 million for Sweet Home Alabama (2002), followed by $15 million for Legally Blonde 2 (2003), where she also earned her first executive producer credit. I think Elle Woods would absolutely approve of this financial glow-up.

Metro-Goldwyn-MayerNOW: Reese has since taken the Hollywood leverage to television, where the numbers got even more interesting. She earned less than $5 million for the first season of Big Little Lies, then reportedly $1 million per episode for Season 2. And when The Morning Show came along, she and Jennifer Aniston were making $2 million per episode—or roughly $20 million each for Season 1, according to THR. She also reportedly earned $1.1 million per episode for Little Fires Everywhere.

Apple TV+17. Jennifer LawrenceTHEN: Jennifer Lawrence startedThe Hunger Games with a $500,000 paycheck for playing Katniss in 2012. Hmm, not exactly chump change. After the first film took off, Lawrence’s deal for Catching Fire jumped to around $10 million.

LionsgateIN BETWEEN: And then came American Hustle in 2013. Lawrence received $1.25 million upfront, plus $250,000 in deferred compensation. Which sounds like a healthy paycheck—because it absolutely was—except her male co-stars Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper each made $2.5 million, meaning Lawrence was paid roughly half as much upfront. Then Lawrence hit the point in her career where eight-figure paychecks became the norm. She took home around $15 million for Joy, then negotiated a $20 million payday for Passengers in 2016. Basically, Katniss had officially left the building.

So we went from $500,000 for The Hunger Games to $25 million for a comedy about a very questionable Craigslist-adjacent dating arrangement. Hollywood math is truly something.

And his Da Vinci Code paydays added another $18 million for the first film, $25 million for Angels & Demons, and $25 million for Inferno.

Bazmark Films19. Ryan GoslingTHEN: Ryan Gosling was just 12 years old when he joined The Mickey Mouse Club in 1993, earning a very un-Hollywood-like $135 to $185 a week. Then The Notebook came along in 2004, and that little weekly paycheck had turned into a $1 million movie payday.

Walt Disney ProductionsIN BETWEEN: He made more than $7 million for The Nice Guys (2016), followed by about $8 million for La La Land (2016) and $6.5 million for First Man (2018). Then Gosling took a break from acting to spend time with his family—and came back with a paycheck that made those earlier numbers look pretty quaint.

Summit EntertainmentNOW: Gosling’s comeback came with a $20 million payday for The Gray Man (2022), and then Barbie gave him another $12.5 million for stepping into the unforgettable role of Ken. At this point, he could probably buy someone the entire Barbie Dreamhouse, and still have plenty left over for the matching pink car.

Mattel Films20. Tom CruiseTHEN: Tom Cruise’s first major movie paycheck was for $50,000 for Taps (1981). Then came Risky Business in 1983, which bumped him up to around $75,000—and Cruise reportedly used some of that money to help pay for his sister’s college tuition. Two years later, Top Gun changed the game entirely, giving him his first seven-figure payday: $2 million.

Geffen Film CompanyIN BETWEEN: He made $12.5 million for A Few Good Men, $15 million for Interview with the Vampire, and $20 million each for Jerry Maguire and Eyes Wide Shut. Then Mission: Impossible arrived in 1996, and Cruise's deal reportedly worked out to $70 million once salary and profit participation were factored in. Somehow, that wasn't even the peak, cause why would it be?

Paramount PicturesNOW: Cruise's Mission: Impossible paydays only got more outrageous from there. Mission: Impossible II brought him around $75 million in salary and profit participation, followed by another $75 million for Mission: Impossible III. Then Ghost Protocol (2011) reportedly put roughly $70 million in his pocket. And decades into the franchise, The Final Reckoning (2025) apparently came with a nine-figure payday, with some estimates putting his total compensation at around $120 million.
